106mm Recoilless Rifle

The 106mm Recoilless Rifle is a lightweight recoilless weapon, which can function either as an anti tank or anti personnel weapon system. It is an air-cooled, breech loaded, single shot rifle that fires fixed ammunition. The M79 mount serves to attach the Rifle to a vehicle and to support the rifle when employed in its ground-mounting role.

In Canada the 106mm Recoilless Rifle came into service in the mid 1950's. It was retired from the Regular Force in 1976 with the introduction of the TOW System and was replaced by the Reserve Force in 1988 by the CARL GUSTAF gun. The complete Canadian Forces inventory of 112 x 106mm and associated spare parts is available for immediate sale.

The United States Department of State must approve all sales.

I have personally not fired the weapons so maybe someone who has can run us through the drills and tell us what it was like to fire.

That looks like Lance Corporal Bill Cockaday of 1 RCR in the No 2 position at upper right.  No 2 aimed and fired the gun on the command of No 1, the gun commander, usually a "full corporal".

In those days a Lance Corporal had one stripe and was a section 2IC.  A corporal or "full corporal" had two stripes and was a section commander.

A two stripe corporal was a rank while a one stripe Lance Corporal was an appointment.

A Lance Corporal who offended the system could be busted to Pte on orders parade by the Coy Comd.  A two stripe corporal could only be reduced by a court martial.

It was a different system from today.

All the best, RT
