Sgt Darrin Clenighan from Windsor, Ont., with the Force Protection Company (FP Coy), of Task Force Kabul (TFK), stands sentry with a C7-A2 assault rifle in the hatch of a LAV III (light armoured vehicle) during a patrol in Kabul, Afghanistan.
FP Coy, made up of troops from "Dukes" Company of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (1RCR), are tasked with Camp Julien security, providing a Quick Reaction Force, escorting convoys, manning observation posts, and conducting dismounted patrols. Over 700 Canadian troops are currently deployed in Afghanistan as part of Operation ATHENA, Canada's contribution to the International Security Assistance Force, (ISAF) in Kabul. At this time, ISAF comprises 8,000 troops from 36 nations.
